Getting Started - Getting Ready To Teach In Korea

Before you send us an application we recommend going through our list of ‘getting started’ recommendations.  We realize the Gone2Korea website is quite large so if you’re searching for specific information but can’t find what you’re looking for then try using our sitemap.

First off, before diving into a year long commitment it’s probably wise to do some research on South Korean culture.  Most westerners truly enjoy the experience of teaching and living abroad, although it’s not for everyone so make sure you know of what you’re getting yourself involved with before moving forward. If you’ve already done your research and are ready to begin the adventure of a lifetime then let’s get started!

1. Make sure you meet the proper application requirements.

2. Do you have all the required documents to teach in Korea? Without them you will not be granted the necessary work visa to teach. Note: You’re more than welcome to send us your application before you have acquired all of the necessary documents.

3. Decide what starting dates you will be able to accommodate. It’s sometimes difficult to match teachers with their preferred arrival dates; therefore having some flexibility may be required. On average it takes about 5-7 weeks to process your application, secure your job and process your work visa. When you fill out our application form please indicate the absolute earliest date you will be able to leave for Korea. We will then do our best to match you with jobs that have similar starting dates. Note: We have positoins avalable 12 months of the year but the majority of jobs become available at the start of each semester. Click When to Apply for more details.

4. Read through the pages that offer insight about school expectations. It’s best to familiarize yourself with the duties and obligations that the schools will require from you to determine if you are suited to Teach in Korea.

5. Try to decide which employment sector, public or private, is best for you. Unfortunately we are unable to offer you jobs from both sectors; therefore, it’s important for you to choose which of the two options you would like to pursue. For more information please visit our private English schools in Korea and public English schools in Korea pages. If you’re not sure which sector you’d like to pursue then one of reps will gladly discuss the options and differences with you in detail. Note: Sometimes we only have options available with certain programs; much depends on your availability and the number of applications we’re receiving.

6. Although Korea is geographically small, it’s has dozens of large urban cities (populations of 1 million+ people), dozens of medium sized cities (populations of 0.5 – 1 million people, and countless small cities and rural areas. If you’re not sure which location is suitable for you, visit the popular destinations to teach in Korea portion of the site for more information. We also suggest that you review our Korean cities and provinces guide for thorough information and links to 100 Korean cities. Again, if you’re not sure what’s best then please don’t hesitate to discuss options and ideas with one of our representatives. Note: It’s best to have 2 or 3 locations preferences in mind. Having one location choice only may limit your options
