Application Requirements for Teaching English in Korea

Before you submit an application with Gone2Korea please make sure you meet ALL of the application requirements outlined below.

Important: We would like to point out that the application requirements for Gone2Korea are based on the visa issuing policies set forth by the Korean Ministry of Justice. There are no exceptions to these requirements and there are no alternative qualifications or credentials that can be used as a substitute to secure a visa for the programs we represent (meaning: we cannot help you secure a work visa unless you meet all of the Korean Immigration requirements). We apologize in advance for those who don’t qualify and hope you understand the restrictions our company must abide.

1. You MUST be a native English speaker to teach English in Korea - English being your first language

People with ‘mild accents’ may still be eligible; however, you will need to provide supporting documentation which verifies you have completed your education in English since grade 7 and onwards within one of the 7 designated countries outlined by the Korean Ministry of Justice (Immigration).

2. Nationality requirements to teach in Korea

You MUST have citizenship and a valid passport from one of the following English speaking countries:
Note: Permanent residence status does not qualify for a teaching visa in Korea.

  • Australia
  • Britain
  • Canada
  • Ireland
  • New Zealand
  • South Africa
  • United States

3. Education – Bachelors degree or greater

You must have a bachelors level degree, or greater, from an accredited university or college. All majors and disciplines are accepted. Please Note: The university or college you attended must reside within one of the 7 countries listed in the Nationality section above. Example: An American citizen who graduated from a university in Spain is not eligible for a work visa with Korean immigration.

We apologize for the discouraging news but these are the requirements set forth by the Korean government. No Degree? There is one teaching program in Korea that accepts applicants who haven’t completed their bachelor’s level degree. In order to qualify for this program you need to have a college certificate, or some university courses, or other teaching related credentials. Please visit the following link for program details: Talk Program Korea

4. Criminal Background Check

All applicants must have a clean criminal abstract. Korean immigration does not accept visa applications from westerners with blemishes on their background reports. Some minor offenses (i.e. traffic violations) may be overlooked; however, you will need to speak with a Gone2Korea representative about these matters before proceeding with your application because additional letters and notarizations will likely be required.

Drinking and driving related offenses (DUI’s, DWI’s, etc.) are not minor offenses. We regret to inform applicants with drinking and driving related charges that your application will not be accepted.

Note: Gone2Korea reserves the right to reject applications that fail to meet the necessary requirements

5. General Health - Mental & Physical

As a teacher you will be required to have good physical and mental health. If you have any health problems please inform the Gone2Korea representative that you are working with. It’s not impossible to obtain employment with minor health problems, although it’s important to let the schools know in advance so they are aware of any potential problems that may affect your responsibilities as a teacher. Please be advised: All teachers are required to submit a Korean Immigration Health Questionnaire before securing their visa. Secondly, all teachers are required to complete a health check at a designated medical clinic in Korea upon arrival. If you falsify the information on your health questionnaire in order to secure the visa then Immigration will find out when you complete the real health examination in Korea. If this happens then your visa will be revoked and you will be forced to leave the country.

6. Attitude

Teaching overseas is a ‘social job’ that requires certain character traits to be effective. Having an outgoing, friendly and open mind will greatly increase your chances of securing a great job in Korea.

7. Documentation

All teachers will need to provide the proper documentation to teach in Korea.

8. Canadian teachers that have graduated from a French university in Quebec

Korean Immigration has specific visa requirements for Quebec citizens. In order to secure a Korean work visa teachers from this province must have conducted their middle school (grade 7 and up), high school and higher education (University education) in English.

Please Note: Teachers who graduated from one of the universities listed below are not eligible for jobs in the private school sector. Teachers are still eligible for jobs in the public school sector; however, they must meet the Korean Immigration educational requirements outlined in the paragraph above.
